ILLUSION OF DARKNESS: Prologue

"The sun was absent from the sky," He said absently in thoughtful tone.  "Actually, the stars weren't visible either. If there was a moon, I'm sure it wouldn't have be visible either."

"Now that I think about it, the sky has been dark and it hasn't stopped raining since that day.   This would have inevitably caused chaos and confusion among the people. At least, that's what would've happened if there was anybody left."

"So much was lost. So many lives..." He gazed out over the now silent battlefield. Broken weapons and corpses covered the ground like grass. "So many lives thrown away as if they were no more than pieces of trash."

"Even if somebody had won..." He shook his head sadly, the sound of clashing swords and the screams of pain still echoed in his ears.  "Both sides had committed too many resources and people to defeating each other to back down."

He sighed and stepped over the prone body of a young man. He paused and turned back to examine the boy's body. "Here in the aftermath of the battle, this one seems no different than that of the one lying beside him.  They both had fought for the glory and honor of his army even if it meant killing his friends. The difference is this one beside him was his from the opposing army. If they had survived, they surely would be trying to kill each other."

He stood up and turned away from bodies of the young men.  The remnants of once great empires lay in shambles around him.  Even after everything had happened, neither side seemed to have learned and the battle was still being fought.

"Such a waste..." He shook his head sadly as he heard the pad of shoes walking up behind him. "If only they could have reached an agreement."

"Now, how many times have I told you to stop coming here?" A soft voice spoke behind him. "You know that there was no way for you to have stopped it from happening."

"Maybe so, but if I only..." He spoke softly and paused a moment before continuing. "It's in the past... and now it's time to move on. But I thought I told you to leave me alone."

"You did, but there is something that's more important than your wishe..."

"Well, you should." He cut his unwanted visitor off.

"This couldn't wait for you to decide when come back." The speaker said pointedly. "This is of the utmost importance."

"What do you mean? What could be more important than this?"

"It's time..."

"T...time...?" He turned to give his guest a startled look as the realization sunk in. "Are you absolutely sure?"

"Yes, they're waiting for you."  The person spoke again as he gazed out over the gory field once more time.  "It truly was a horrible battle wasn't it?"

"It was, but I hate to think of what would have happened if someone had won." He sighed as he looked over the bloody battlefield. "Too bad the past can't just stay in the past."

"Come, they're waiting for us." His said as guest turned and walked away from him.  He sighed and followed his messanger back through the silent battlefield.
